As the VFW National Headquarter’s official Facebook page reaches 300,000 likes, the VFW is shedding its image as an outdated organization and utilizing the benefits social media has to offer. In the last three years, the VFW Facebook page has increased by 90 percent.

As a result of the ongoing shutdown, the Department of Veterans Affairs GI Bill hotline, 1-888-GIBILL-1, remains offline, meaning veterans have very few places to turn for reliable information on accessing their earned GI Bill benefits. To counter the lack of customer service, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States (VFW) and Student Veterans of America (SVA) are once again informing veterans that the “1 Student Veteran” program is fully open for the business. Those with questions regarding GI Bill, or other benefits should email 1studentveteran@vfw.org, for timely assistance.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. filed papers last week to intervene in the ongoing class action lawsuits against Prudential Insurance Company of America concerning its handling of the life insurance benefits for service members and veterans. Prudential administers the Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) program for the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the 2010 suit alleges that Prudential failed to pay death benefits in a manner required by federal law, and instead profited from money belonging to the families of deceased service members and veterans.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars, America’s largest organization of combat veterans, has announced that its official charity, the VFW Foundation, is taking urgent action to help the families of fallen U.S. service members. Because of the federal government shutdown, the Pentagon is withholding a $100,000 death gratuity payment that is usually given to relatives of the deceased. Such payments stopped effective September 30, 2013 at 11:59 p.m.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. is applauding yesterday’s Senate passage of H.R. 4057, the Improving Transparency in Education for Veterans Act, a bill designed to improve consumer protections for student-veterans who use their Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits. The bill must now go back to the House for final approval before heading to the White House for the president’s signature.

“The VFW has worked diligently over the past year to build consensus among other veterans’ groups and education advocates to ensure we provide student-veterans with quality consumer information and consumer protections when they seek to use their earned GI Bill benefits,” said VFW National Commander John Hamilton, a combat wounded Vietnam veteran.

Dozens of wounded warriors will once again converge on CrossFit Rubicon in Vienna, Va., this Saturday for the second annual Working Wounded Games. Hosted in conjunction with CrossFit Walter Reed and volunteers from other metro area CrossFit affiliates, the Working Wounded Games brings together veterans with combat-related disabilities and other adaptive athletes to compete in an open-style competition that will benefit adaptive exercise programs through the Crossroads Adaptive Athletic Alliance. Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief Bill Thien and Student Veterans of America Executive Director Michael Dakduk signed a memorandum of understanding between the VFW and SVA last week during the fifth annual SVA national conference in Orlando, Fla.

“This memorandum will provide opportunities for the VFW and SVA to pool their resources and help our veterans and nation’s service members overcome many challenges, find strength in camaraderie and provide expanded programs and services for veterans on college campuses nationwide,” said Thien, a Vietnam veteran who attended Indiana University Southeast after his military service. “The entire VFW and its Auxiliaries are extremely pleased to have this opportunity to work with the SVA in ensuring our student-veterans attain the education and benefits we promised them.”

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Stolen Valor Act of 2005 almost a year ago on the grounds that lying was protected speech, but justices on both sides of the 6-3 decision also provided a roadmap requiring any future legislation to be narrower in focus than just to penalize people for simple lying. Yesterday, the president signed the new Stolen Valor Act of 2013 into law.

VFW Riders are escorting a Purple Heart as it makes its way home this week from St. Louis, Mo., to Dayton, Nev. Donna Gregory found the Purple Heart over 12 years ago while sifting through boxes in a closet. When she pulled out the medal with Pvt. John F. Eddington’s name engraved on it, no one could tell her where it came from or why it was there. Along with the Purple Heart, Donna found a letter written to the soldier’s baby daughter while he was serving in Italy. It was then that her search for the Purple Heart recipient began.

Newtown Post 308 set up a Newtown/Sandy Hook Family Relief Fund to assist with the funeral costs for parents who did not have life insurance on their young children. If needed, some of the money will also help first responders.
