2013 Pearl Harbor Observance
World War II Memorial

On December 7, 1941 at 7:55 (Hawaii time) “a date which will live in infamy” more than 3,500 Americans were killed or wounded during an attack on America’s naval base in Hawaii. Seventy-two years later, we honor and pay tribute to the heroism and strength of the Greatest Generation who served during World War II.

The Iowa Chapter of the Sons & Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors is hosting a Remembrance Day event on Saturday, December 7, 2013, beginning promptly at 11:40 a.m. with a rifle salute by the Larry Nehring Det. of the Marine Corps League at 11:55 a.m., followed by taps. Col. Robert King will read the Governor's Proclamation and the two Iowa Pearl Harbor survivors will lay the wreath (if their health allows).

The Pearl Harbor Memorial is located south of the Iowa State Capitol – East 13th & Grand Avenue in Des Moines. Following the ceremony there will be a luncheon open to the public at AMVETS Post 2, located at 2818 5th Avenue, Des Moines, Iowa. Mon, 02 Dec 2013 00:00:35 +0000
Wreaths Across America (WAA), a nonprofit organization founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, is working hard to fulfill its mission to Remember, Honor and Teach.

On Dec. 14, National Wreaths Across America Day, remembrance wreaths will be placed at the headstones of fallen veterans at more than 800 locations across the country and overseas. A remembrance ceremony will be held at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa, on this day to ensure that the individuals who served to protect the freedoms of our country are not, and never will be, forgotten.

Those unable to participate in the wreath-laying ceremony are invited to visit the WAA website and social media channels to follow the organization and sponsor a wreath. Supporters are encouraged to honor a veteran or active military member by visiting the WAA “Honor Wall” on its official Facebook page and contributing personal stories, posting photos and sharing with family and friends.
This year will be my 6th year to coordinate the “Wreaths Across America” ceremony at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, each year we have continued to grow with those in attendance and the number of wreaths that are placed at our veterans or family members headstones. Ceremonies will start promptly at 11:00 AM on Dec 14th with a brief ceremony in the committal shelter, the placing of the ceremonial wreaths, followed by family members placing a wreath at their loved ones headstone and then volunteers will place wreaths at all the remainder of the headstones. Everyone is invited to attend and to assist in the ceremony; it is a way to remember our veterans and loved ones during this holiday season. VA FRAUD ALERT The Department of Veterans Affairs has issued a fraud alert abou...

VA FRAUD ALERT

The Department of Veterans Affairs has issued a fraud alert about a marketing scam that is targeting veterans who misdial the VA National Call Center (800-827-1000) or the GI Bill Call Center (888-442-4551) phone numbers. A marketing company created two phone numbers that differ from the real VA numbers by one digit. If a veteran misdials and calls the bogus number, the answering party will offer a gift card and try to obtain sensitive personal data, to include credit card information. Please note that the VA will “never” ask for credit card or banking information over the phone.

The two bogus numbers are 800-872-1000 and 888-442-4511. Please forward this information to all your members, Posts and friends, and share it on your websites. The bottom line is make sure you know who you are talking to before providing personal information over the phone. The VA has notified law enforcement authorities.

For a list of toll-free VA phone numbers, go to the VA’s Inquiry Routing & Information System webpage at https://iris.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1703.

Joe Davis
